Dreaming in English, 26/03/12

Hello there, Vivian here! The last few weeks I’ve been visiting some famous places in Central London. My friend and I took a train from ‘Clock House’ – the nearest station for Kings London – to Charing Cross. Charing Cross is right next to Trafalgar Square, in the heart of the West End, and the journey from Kings takes less than 30 minutes. (more…)

Extra-curricular activity

Strawberries and cream, Champagne on Henman Hill (or should that be Murray Mount?), Centre Court, the Williams sisters, rain! It can only mean one thing…Wimbledon!!

The start of the summer term at Kings London brings the start of the oldest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon. It’s been going since 1877 and is now the world’s only remaining major grass-court tennis venue. It’s also time to start my tennis practice again. I play against my friend and colleague, Gaston, who, due to an unexplained wrist injury, had to pull out of last year’s practice. Personally, I think he was just afraid that I was going to beat him! Japan Night: Thursday 31 March

This Thursday, Kings London is hosting ‘Japan Night‘ – an event to raise funds for victims of the Japanese earthquake. Visitors will have opportunities to taste Japanese food, learn how to make sushi, perform origami and even sing Karaoke if they feel so inclined, as well as to meet some of our students from Japan and other countries. Alison Roach, from the Red Cross, will be giving a short presentation early in the evening on the relief efforts currently underway.

The cost of admission is £10 per person (£7 students) and Kings hopes to raise as much money as possible. Anyone interested in attending should pre-book by phone or email (020 8650 5891, london@kingscolleges.com). If you are unable to attend, but would like to make a donation, please get in touch. The nominated charity is the International Red Cross.

BelowZero

The latest news from our music/nightlife correspondent: Javier Aquique.

London definitely has a lot to offer as a tourist destination, but there are many places that are virtually hidden – places accessible to everyone but sometimes they don’t have much publicity. In any case, one of these places is the Belowzero bar, if you haven’t heard about it you should check it out.

What makes this bar so unique? At first it looks like a very fancy place, but in Regent Street most of the places are like this, but the thing that gets everyone’s attention is the fact that inside the lounge is the Absolut Ice Bar. Have you ever heard of a hotel in Iceland that’s made totally out of ice? Well this is the exact same thing, only it is just a bar. Literally everything is made out of ice, the walls, the chairs, the bar, even the glasses.

One cool customer

The bar is -5 degrees Celsius at all times, for obvious reasons the staff provide the visitors with designer coats and gloves in order to stand the freezing temperatures, nevertheless it is literally breathtaking to take an excellent cocktail of the best Absolut vodka in these conditions. There’s just one catch – groups of visitors can only remain in the bar for 40 minutes, there’s even a timer on one of the walls that lets everybody know how much time they’ve got left. (more…)

Raising money for charity

Two of our long-term Korean students recently took part in a sponsored swim at Beckenham Spa, a sports centre just across the road from the school.

Swimmers

Swimming for charity

Jae Hong Kim and Yo Han An were strangers when they came to Kings last September. They met in Elementary class and now Yo Han is studying at First Certificate level and Jae Hong at Intermediate. They discovered a shared interest in swimming – in fact Yo Han could not swim before coming to England and Jae Hong took on the task of teaching him.
